Daily Run and Cross-training and Strength-training: Oh My!

Time of Day: 5:40 AM

Weather: Clear and much colder. I knew that wind was taking away my warm mornings!

Duration: 30 minutes

Estimated Distance (based on assumed pace of 7:35/mile): 3.96 miles

Notes: I got up even earlier than usual today because yesterday left me racing around the house before work and I wanted to at least blow dry my hair this morning. Still not rested-there was a barking dog and then a wrong number call at 2:45 AM. The phone only rang once, but it’s on my night stand, so that’s all a light sleeper like me needs to get the crap scared out of her.

My Achilles is making progress, and my ART practitioner is very pleased. So am I, and so I’m planning on a nice, hour long run tomorrow. It still hurts a little during my run and then immediately after, but less than yesterday.

My flat trail has a few too many divets for a pre-dawn run. I’m tempting fate out there.


Time of Day: 6:15 AM

Weather: Air-conditioned

Duration: 25 min.

Notes: My sister’s Cosmopolitan magazines are mailed to my place, and she picks them up on holidays when she comes home. I remembered them today and grabbed one for the elliptical. It did not alleviate my boredom in the slightest. Who are these women who need an entire magazine subscription to figure out men? It’s just not. that. difficult. Teach me something useful, Cosmopolitan, like how to fix my Achilles so that I don’t ever have to read you on the elliptical again.

Strength Training

Time of Day: 5:20 PM, Nov. 6th

Weather: Air-conditioned

Duration: About 40 minutes

Notes: Don’t worry, this workout is from yesterday. I did not run, do the elliptical, and get in a 40 min. strength session all before work this morning. I’m good, but not that good. I am so glad that I can do my cardio in the mornings, because the gym is crowded and annoying after work and sometimes all the ellipticals are taken. Last night I actually made progress on my bicep curls; added a little weight for the last 5 reps. Yes!

I did 2 sets of 15 reps of the following arm exercises:

  • Lat pulldown
  • Lat row
  • Shoulder press
  • Vertical butterfly
  • Chest press
  • Bicep curls
  • Tricep dips/extensions


  • 30 inclined sit-ups holding a 6-lb. medicine ball
  • Home therapy exercises
  • Ultimate Abs core workout (linked in side bar). I’m in the Dynamic phase, week 2.

Because Training for a Half and Grounded Fitness Both Rule

Training for a Half gave me a Butterfly Award, which makes me very happy because…I like getting awards. And also because I’ve always admired her blog and the fact that she actually likes mine is unspeakably awesome. But now I have to pass this award on, and I can’t just cheesily send it back to tfh, so it’s decision time.

There are many blogs that I like and I had a difficult time choosing to whom to send this award. I’m choosing Grounded Fitness because I’m extremely jealous of Kelly, who is a personal trainer and writer (hello dream job!). Her blog is full of good exercise tips mixed with provocative articles about body image and life, all while managing to be entertaining. Good job, Kelly!

  5. Don’t tempt fate with a divet run. I’m pretty sure “broken ankle” is worse then “sore Achilles” on the Quickest to Heal chart. Happy healing!

  7. Glad to hear your achilles is getting better…maybe not much longer on the elliptical?! I think I’m gonna do a short run tomorrow to see how my shin is feeling…this elliptical crap is getting boring. However, the nice thing is that I can get lots of reading for classes done on it 🙂 I can’t see me running and reading notes/articles…that would be very dangerous.

    And I agree…I love Kelly’s blog, too! It’s different than a lot of the other blogs out there and she touches on lots of different subjects!

  9. hahahahaha – cosmo is the worst, i agree. It’s one of those magazines that if I pick it up at the gym, I hope no men get on an elliptical next to mine!

    What kind of running sneakers do you wear? Do you have one pair that you use at a time even if you’re on the elliptical?
